Eleven teachers (four art, one English, one math, one culinary arts, two social studies, one English language, and a guidance counselor) are using a professional learning day to gather at the Washington County Museum of Art in Hagerstown, Maryland.  We are viewing artwork, responding to it in writing, and sharing with one another.

For example, Eudora Welty’s Southern Narrative photographs are on display at the museum.  Participants may choose to respond in writing to one photograph or may select to write the story the collective photographs tell.

The inspiration for the writing event is from the Art, Empathy, and the Written Word educators’ seminar at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.  This is the seminar that provided two participants the opportunity to offer a professional learning course to all district teachers.
